In the United States, society’s historical attitude about the sexual victimization of children can generally be summed up in one word: denial. Most people do not want to hear about it and would prefer to pretend such victimization just does not occur. Today, however, it is difficult to pretend it does not happen. Media stories and reports about child sexual abuse and exploitation are daily occurrences.

Still, society seems to have a problem addressing any sexual-victimization case in which the adult offender is not completely “bad” or the child victim is not completely “good.”  E.g., the charismatic priest, the caring teacher, the works so well with kids guidance counselor.

Kenneth Lanning’s report for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children talks about predators choosing careers for access to children.

While this report is not all-inclusive it can be a good guide for parents wanting to broaden their understanding of what to be aware of with respect to their children.
